Folding-Arm Awnings
Shade on demand over the stoep, the deck or the braai area — no posts, no permanent roof, retracting into a cassette when you don't need it.
The veranda argument
Irene's older homes were built with a stoep for a reason — it was the original answer to a highveld summer, long before anyone had air conditioning. A folding-arm awning is the modern version of that same idea: it turns a baking north- or west-facing veranda back into a room you'll actually sit on through summer, then retracts to let welcome winter sun through. Fixed roof structures can't make that seasonal argument; a retractable awning can.
No posts, no clutter
Because the arms fold rather than resting on legs, there's nothing interrupting the view down the garden or getting in the way of the braai. Projection runs to roughly 3–4m over wide spans, and solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are made to hold their colour under harsh South African UV.
Cassette, crank or motor
A full cassette seals the fabric and arms away completely when retracted — the right call on an exposed or weather-facing stoep. Semi-cassette and open mounting are also available where the position is more sheltered. Crank-handle operation works, but motorised is the responsible spec: paired with a wind sensor, the awning auto-retracts before a highveld gust or a fast-moving summer storm gets to it. An awning caught open in that kind of weather is usually the one that gets damaged.
Honest limitations
An awning is a shade product, not a rain product — fine at a pitch in light drizzle, never intended for real storm rain or standing water. Wind ratings are genuine limits, not suggestions, and the fixing substrate matters: brick, timber and steel fascias all need a different approach, which is exactly what the site visit is for. On a heritage roofline we'll check how the bracket meets the existing eave before anything is quoted.
Fitting awnings across Irene and next door
From heritage stoeps to a new-build braai deck, we fit folding-arm awnings across Cornwall Hill's landscaped gardens, Southdowns Estate's covered patios, Raslouw's outdoor entertainment areas and Eldoraigne's established verandas.
